Started from the bottom now we’re here. If you read my CityLine event recap post, you’ll know that we got a very generous gift bag full of amazing makeup. One other thing I got was a $70 gift card to The Bay which I ended up splurging on a Burberry eyeshadow palette! It’s so funny because this day was probably my first entrance into the ‘luxury’ or high end makeup market. So I guess the question is: do I think it’s worth it?

I can’t say that I’ve been really only a drugstore girl or anything. As I’ve gotten into my makeup groove over the past couple (or more) years, I feel like I’ve found myself planted in the ‘Sephora’ category of makeup. I don’t really go to the drugstore any more (which is actually a shame). I find most of my makeup purchases end up at Sephora (or at least Sephora brands).

On a side tangent, I feel like the drugstore has gotten pretty expensive lately! Coupled with the fact that you can’t return things actually make it a gamble. I feel like that’s one of the reasons why I’ve diverted from the drugstore. I end up maybe buying less (pah who am I kidding) but with the ability to return makes it worth it in case a product doesn’t work for me.

Going back to the topic of luxury makeup. Is it really that much better than a drugstore of even Sephora branded counter part? I think with anything in life: it depends. Buying anything with such a steep price tag as some of these products have, you would expect the best quality.

After playing around with some of the products, I think they’re great! Definitely nothing to huff at! But I think most things are pretty dupeable. For example, Makeup Geek are some of the best shadows I’ve used. They are probably a tenth of the price of some of the higher end eye shadows.

What I think you really pay for in high end makeup is the packaging. Everything just feels so heavy if you know what I mean. As a makeup lover I can appreciate a good embossing and packaging. The packaging is definitely what I think makes luxury makeup luxury.

This post was more of a splash of ideas if anything. Obviously no offence to anyone that loves drugstore, or loves luxury. You do you.

So what are your thoughts on luxury makeup?

Thanks so much for reading! Hope you have a wonderful day!

  1. Oh yeah, luxury make-up is all about the look and feel and WEIGHT of it! πŸ™‚ I personally use both drugstore and high-end brands. In the end what I care about most is the quality of the formula and how it looks on me. But it sure is nice of course to have a product that oozes luxury and elegance πŸ™‚

    1. Exactly! And that totally makes sense! I feel the exact same way as you! Love the feel of luxury and if it’s nice, a huge plus! But if I can find a dupe for cheaper, might as well try! πŸ™‚

  2. You bought MORE makeup at The Bay with the giftcard?? L O L; hope the Burberry palette is worth it!

When I first started dabbling in makeup, drugstore was definitely my entry…and then I began buying high end blushes which turned into buying high end everything. Some high end products are worth it, while I find that some are just ‘meh’ products disguised in super pretty/luxe packaging (…sadly, hah). I mean, they are so much nicer to photograph, but y’know, whatever floats everyone’s boats! πŸ˜€

And good lord, that YSL duo is BEAUUUUTIFUL *-*

    1. I know right? Well for one of the gift cards (we got 2 from the Bay) apparently you had to use it on beauty? Fine with me! I really like the Burberry palette actually. I’ve been acquiring so much eye shadow I need to stop. x__x

Yeah you’re totally right I think it’s almost one entry product and you’re in. I’m close on the lip products for luxury. Totally in love with Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks and been debating a YSL lipstick for awhile. I just honestly can’t get around that price though!!

  3. Definitely I’ve been buying from Sephora more and more because of the return policy. There’s no lie that drugstore stuff have been getting better (even just in the past 4 years I’ve been into makeup!) but there’s always the risk of not liking something. Really luxury stuff, like designer makeup, is soooo pretty but I don’t think I’d ever want to go that route. I hope you like everything you got!!

    1. Totally agree on the drugstore. Mostly what I end up getting from the drugstore I like a lot, but it really depends. I find whatever I buy from the drugstore I research it a lot more just because you CAN’T return it. I can totally see your point of view for designer makeup!! Thanks!

  4. Hey great post! Completely irrelevant, but I as wondering how you’re liking the guerlin meteorites! I’ve been wanting to try them, but the price tag is so steep….

    1. Not irrelevant at all Becca, thanks for the comment! I actually haven’t been using it that much! But for me personally, I don’t think I would really pay for them. It’s a very high quality product and gives you a very pretty glow, but I personally prefer pressed powder I think. It’s super pretty on my vanity though! Haha!

      1. I see…thats the same thing that i’ve been hearing when reading reviews too! That is pretty, but not quite worth the money. Thanks!
