First Impression: Too Faced x Kat von D Better Together Palette

Too Faced x Kat Von D Better Together

Too Faced and Kat Von D are both heavyweight brands in the beauty world. When I first heard that these two brands were doing a collaboration back in August, I was definitely intrigued. I would say I’m more familiar with the Kat Von D brand compared to Too Faced, but with the Sweet Peach Collection, I can definitely say I’ve dived right into the brand with no looking back!

The Better Together kit includes two separate palettes that can be combined with magnets in the spine including a full sized KVD Tattoo liner and Too Faced Better than Sex mascara. I took some time deciding if I was going to get this kit at $80 CAD. I finally caved because I’m a sucker for limited edition sets. Do I think it’s worth it though? Lets get on with the first impressions.

Packaging

As I mentioned, this is a rather clever set as the two heart pieces snap together or can be separated which gives it flexibility when storing the palette(s). I did a little Boomerang video of the palette separating and snapping together:

Each palette contains a cute letter written by the brand creator (Jarrod from Too Faced and Kat from KVD). The focus is on the idea of being ‘better together’ through support, kindness, and friendship. It’s a lovely idea. The world could always use more kindness!

Quality and Swatches

In terms of the shadows, I was happy with most colours and the quality is what you would expect with Too Faced and Kat Von D.

BFF – Lovely – Friendspiration – Heart of Gold – Power Couple – Better Together

In the Too Faced Palette, the standout colours for me are Friendspiration and Lovely. Power Couple and Better Together came off a bit chunky with the glitter, but still usable.

Por Vida – Lovestruck – Darling – Swoon – Yours – Devotion

The standout in the KVD side is DEFINITELY Swoon. I had no idea that Swoon would have a metallic sheen to it which I love. It’s a very original colour and is very KVD. I really liked Lovestruck in the pan, but I found it was hard to get a very pigmented swatch from it.

All in all, I would say you’re getting a decent range of shadows which really speaks to the brand’s image at an (expectantly) high quality!

Price

I thought I would go through a price breakdown as the kit cause that $80 hits you pretty hard!

TF Better Than Sex Mascara: $30 CAD

KVD Tattoo Liner: $25 CAD

Too Faced Palettes (like the Chocolate Bar palette) retails for $59 CAD / (around) 18 shadows = $3.28  per shadow
6 shadows in the Better Together half * $3.28 = $19.67

Kat Von D Palette (Shade + Light Eye Contour used as reference) retails for $30 / (around) 4 shadows = $7.50 per shadow
6 shadows in the Better Together half * $7.50 = $45

TOTAL = 30 + 25 + 19.67 + 45 = $119.67

One note is that I’m not positive the amount of product in each palette and if they match the ones that I compared.

So after my (non perfect) math, by buying this kit, you’re saving around $40 CAD if you were to buy the equivalent items. Have I convinced you yet? 😉

In the end, I’m very happy I bought this kit. The colours, the branding, the theme and the packaging meld together to really make a collaboration that is ‘better together’!

  1. Too Faced is one of my favorite brands but I despise Kat Von D. I really love the idea of brands collaborating with one another, but I felt that Kat Von D was such a weird collaboration for Too Faced… despite it being a good idea. Anyways, I wonder if the brands will promote other collaborations later on!

    1. Ah! Yeah I’m sure I’d help if you like both the brands that that collaboration contains! I think actually one of the reasons why I liked this palette so much was that they seem so different. Too Faced with the pink and KVD with the edge haha. Hopefully there will definitely be more collaborations in the future!

    1. Yeah it’s pretty pricey. I’m glad that there is a savings if you happen to buy things individually! And if you like both the BTS and Tattoo… 😉

Yes! I’m hoping to start creating looks! If not a post, then definitely insta. 🙂

  2. Hey girlfriend – the one thing I loved that you did was the price breakdown of the shadows! I have to admit, the red would still be intimidating for me to use – but hey i appreciate how KVD would want to do something not cookie cutter…

  3. I appreciate the price break down – at first glance this looks way over priced! The swatches are gorgeous too!

  4. This palette really didn’t interest me. I love Too Faced, but I feel like they’re becoming a bit over rated, and Jerrod annoys me a bit now. Love how you did the price breakdown, and the palette looks a lot better than expected!

  5. Thanks so much for the swatches! This is such a super fun collaboration, but I’m bummed that more of the shades don’t excite me. There are a few stunning standout shades, but otherwise I think I’ll be able to pass!

  6. Glad you liked the set!! But $80 is still really steep! I guess it works if you were already needing the mascara and the liner. I do agree the concept is so cute though!!
