Versus: Beauty Blender and Real Techniques Sponges

Hello friends! It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Versus post. These are actually some of my favourites to write just because I love to read comparisons too. Anyways, today I’ll be looking at the Beauty Blender and the Real Techniques (RT) Miracle Complexion Sponge. I know this comparison is very popular, but I’ve never actually tried the RT sponge before. I just got into a habit of always buying Beauty Blenders. When I was sent the RT sponge to try, I thought I could finally see if they were comparable! I also have the RT Miracle Mini Eye Erasers that I can add my two cents on (I don’t have the Beauty Blender version to compare these to though).

Sponges

In terms of the actual sponges, there are definitely differences. The RT sponge is larger and denser than the Beauty Blender. The RT sponge has a crafted edge while the Beauty Blender is a completely rounded at the top.

Dry Sponges

Wet Sponges

From the above pictures, all the sponges grow by about the same size (double). Even while wet, the RT sponge is denser and larger.

Application

Now we get to the good stuff. I’ve been using the RT sponge for sometime and using it with all different foundations. Similar to the Beauty Blender, I find that some foundations just do not apply well with a sponge. I tested the RT sponge with the same foundations I can use with a Beauty Blender.

What I can say is the application is almost identical to a Beauty Blender. This was such a nice surprise. I will say though that the RT sponge requires just a minuscule amount more of blending. I believe the reason for this is the denser quality compared to the Beauty Blender. I want to emphasize that this difference is so so small that it’s really not that noticeable at all.

In terms of the little RT Mini Eye Eraser sponges, I think they’re cute. I can say they are good to blend in concealer for under the eyes. Since they’re so small, they can get into all the crevices. These are interesting as they are not really marketed as a tool to apply makeup. They are to help fix up makeup mistakes such as eye shadow fall out or mascara smudges. I only really experience noticeable fallout when I use my loose glitter. Using the RT Mini Eye Erasers on this, it did help.  With this being said though, I feel like they’re pretty comparable to a full sized sponge (used dry). As cute as they are (and not nearly as expensive as the Beauty Blender ones), I’m not sure if I would repurchase.

Price

So you’ve hear me blab on and on about how close these sponges are. Now to the main difference, price. The Beauty Blender retails at Sephora for $28 CAD. The RT sponges retail for $33 CAD for 4 sponges. You heard right. FOUR SPONGES. That means around $8.25 a sponge. So for the same price as 1 Beauty Blender you can get 3 RT sponges. Wahhhhh?!? Now that’s a major difference.

Verdict

I think it’s clear to see that the RT Miracle Complexion Sponges won out. Both sponges performed equally as well but for a MASSIVE price difference. This is definitely enough to make me switch over. Once my backups of all my Beauty Blenders are up, I’m gonna stick with the Real Techniques sponges!!

You can find the RT sponges at Rexall, Walmart (online included), PharmaPlus, and London Drugs.

Thanks for reading! Hope you have a great day!

  1. I’ve been using the Beauty Blender a ton lately, but I also order some for 40% off at Urban Outfitters during the last employee appreciation. But I think the RT ones are just as good and at such a lover price difference, it’s definitely a better deal!

    1. Ah interesting! After putting up this post I’ve heard both sides, only buying beauty blender or only buying rt! So crazy! Do what works for you right? 🙂

  2. i’ve only ever used Sephora branded sponges haha – I hear so many good things about the bb but I don’t think I can bring myself to purchase one XD

  3. I love mine I only got the original orange one and I love it !!! I love how it works well with my foundation and my bb cream and gives me the same finish for both. I get it as damp as I can get it and let it sit for a little before applying, so some of the water evaporates before applying my makeup and find that works the best with this sponge.

    1. Yeah I usually try and squeeze mine out with a towel afterwards just to get a ‘damp’ sponge versus soaked one! So cool to know you love the RT one too!
