Book Review: The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

The Compassionate Chick's Guide to DIY Beauty: 125 Recipes for Vegan, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free Makeup, Skin and Hair Care Products

Hi folks! Today I have something much different than my usual beauty posts! I got the chance to review a new beauty book called The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty. I’m not much for a DIYer and neither vegan or gluten free. For all of these reasons, I was very interested in trying this book out. I thought I could learn a lot and have some fun experimenting with some of the recipes!

The book was written by Sunny Subramanian, a fellow blogger over at Vegan Beauty Review. Some introductory pages introduce Sunny and her vegan beauty journey. It was interesting to read about her and the reasons she decided to turn vegan. Also in the introductory pages, there was a lot of interesting information about the beauty industry, veganism, and the cruelty free lifestyle.

Getting into the meat of the book, recipes are divided into a couple sections covering off hair, skin, makeup, and more. Each recipe has beautiful pictures including an easy to follow breakdown of how to re-create the homemade product.

I’ve tried a couple of recipes in the book so far. What I really like is that there is a recipe for everything. All types of skin, all types of hair, and more. So even though not every single of the 125 recipes may apply to you, there will definitely be more than a couple that do!

A Peppermint lip scrub I mixed up!

Each recipe is definitely of varying degree of difficulty in my opinion. Some require some very specialized ingredients, while others are quite simple (a hair rinse with just distilled water and lemon that actually worked wonders). For some of the recipes that I wanted to try I had to definitely go out and purchase some things. I would say depending on how full your pantry is would determine how many ingredients you would need to go out and purchase

All in all, I think this book is worth a read. It’s a great investment just to have as a resource for those looking to go vegan or are interested in the topic. As mentioned, even though I’m not vegan, I still found some great recipes to try out. It was fun making and bottling my creations up to use for later!

This book was just released. If you’re interested, you can find the book on Amazon!

Thanks so much for reading! Hope you have a wonderful day!
